The Last Battle Of Ursula Major by Chuck Melville

A scene from the back-history I wrote for the various Katara stories I do, this was an event during the Ont Wars, where the free peoples battled the Onts from the cursed northern lands. Here, Ursula Major and her forces wage a doomed battle whose only purpose was to hold the Onts back long enough for other armies to position themselves for a more decisive victory. I touch more on her fate in the recently published story, FELICIA AND THE LAST HOMELY HOUSE OF HONEYPOT BRUIN, in the VIXEN SORCERESS collection.

Loosely based on the kitchen of my first apartment in Seattle, though we never had such a goofy wall clock. No, I never experienced a cooking mishap like this one, but I almost had a kitchen fire (in an earlier apartment) accidentally caused by my cats climbing up on the stove to get to the cat food that was stored in the overhead cupboards.

This cartoon was inspired by the misadventures of my then-roommate as he drove a disintegrating RV back home to Seattle from Midland, Texas. I got a blow-by-blow account of the trip by phone every day. No raccoons were harmed.

I used to do these cartoon gags for my contribution to the Rowrbrazzle APA, back when I was a member, featuring Gus the grumpy lion. Most of the time, like this one, they would just illustrate something silly, but sometimes they would reflect a change in my life.

I was SO proud of this gag when I first drew it. Then I discovered that I was beaten to it by an issue of CAPTAIN CARROT AND HIS AMAZING ZOO CREW, and realized that I had read the story and must have had the gag bouncing in the back of my mind since then. So... not original. But I still like the way it came out.

Another sketch from the sketchbook. Just a stray thought that came to mind, about the scientific process to actually genetically engineer a furry, and the steps it would take. It occurs to me there would be selective breeding involved and the first few generations would be in some awkward state, physically and mentally -- not to mention emotionally -- between Man and Animal. Beyond the obvious, I mean.

Found this tucked away in my art files. Drawn a few years ago in standard pen and ink rather than markers, but I got disgusted at the amount of ink bleeding into the paper, so I put it away and forgot all about it.
